Tips for the Female DIY’er

If you are a female, you may be somewhat fazed by the modern day do-it-yourself (DIY) talk that is bandied around the supper table and at social parties. Or, perhaps not? According to recent trends, women DIY’ers are becoming an increasingly popular, visible group of home decorators, furnishers, repairers, etc, as determined as their male counterparts to get their hands into it all by themselves.

Websites such as BeJane.com and DIYWoman.com provide thousands of women, from the novice to the expert, with advice, tips, and forums concerning DIY. In addition, there are numerous internet sites that provide online courses in DIY, as well as traditional courses that one can attend on almost any DIY subject. Many magazines are similarly devoted to the female DIY’er, recognising this growing population to be as capable and committed as the men.

With regards to tools and equipment, there is a new line of women-tailored products, produced by DIYWoman, that are designed with women in mind – they are shaped and weighted for a woman’s hand, and are ergonomic and practical. It’s not that women’s interest in the design and workings of the home has changed. What has changed in recent years is women’s realisation that home improvements are not solely a man’s field, rather that women are as capable as men of picking up power tools and putting them to good use. Reported to be a multi-billion-pound industry, the female home improvement market is fluid, buoyant, and busy with DIY activity.
