How to Use Plaster

Plastering need not be a long and drawn out process. It is a very simple and easy material to use that can be applied across a number of jobs. The most common do it yourself use is to plaster walls and smooth them out for further decoration. You can learn how to use plaster by following a few simple steps:

Step One
Take a bucket and pour some plaster in. Use a larger batch if tackling a larger job. Most plaster should mix with water to form a paste but follow the directions that will come with the plaster if they say differently.

Step Two
Make sure the proportions are exactly correct. If too much water or mixing agent is used then it will leave a very thin plaster or a too thick one. This will take away the efficiency of any following plaster job and means the process will have to start again.

Step Three
Mix the water and dry plaster together using a large wooden stick. Stir thoroughly until the mixture starts to firm up, almost like a mixture you would use when making bread.

Step Four
Use a putty knife to lace a wall with plaster. Apply it directly over a crack or hole and it will seep into that space. Try and get a smooth surface but remember this can be sanded down at a later point.

Step Five
Allow the plaster to dry, sand down and then use wallpaper or paint to cover the repaired area.
